When to Walk the Pekoe Trail from Galaha, Month by Month
Ten years of weather records for these hills, and what they mean for Stages 1 to 3.
The Bungalow Team ·
We walk the Pekoe Trail in every month of the year. What changes is the character of the day: how often the morning begins in mist, how warm the afternoon gets, and how likely a shower is before you reach the finish. The figures below come from ten years of hourly weather records for the hills around Galaha (Open-Meteo, ERA5, 2016 to 2025). They describe typical conditions, never a forecast.
One pattern holds in every month: rain is far more likely in the afternoon than in the morning. Between 7 and 11 in the morning the chance of rain in any hour is usually 5 to 23 percent; between 1 and 5 in the afternoon it is two to seven times higher. Start early, and most walks end before the clouds build.
January and February are the most settled months. Rain falls on about a third of days, the afternoons reach around 24 to 25°C and nights fall to about 18°C. Mist is common at dawn (on about four mornings in ten in January), and it usually lifts as the sun climbs over the ridges.
March is drier, and the warmest stretch begins: afternoons of 27 to 28°C in March and April. In April showers return on most days (63 percent), almost always after lunch, so it is a month for early starts.
May is wet, with rain on two days in three. June is often kinder here than its reputation, with rain on 44 percent of days and much smaller totals.
July to September is the trail's second window. Rain falls on about half the days, but the monthly totals stay modest, and these months have the fewest misty dawns of the year (8 to 13 percent): the clearest mornings for the long views from the ridges.
October and November are the wettest months, with around 230 and 310 mm of rain and showers on three days in four. The paths can be slippery and the leeches busy. We still walk, but we check the conditions and brief you on the morning of every hike.
December dries out again: rain on 58 percent of days, and mist on four dawns in ten as the cool season returns.
Whichever month you choose, the plan is the same: breakfast early, walk in the cool of the morning, and be back at the bungalow for tea and a hot bath by the time the afternoon clouds arrive. To see how the stages fit around your nights with us, try the planner on our Pekoe Trail page.
